Hospital de Base – São José do Rio Preto

47 nurses and midwives have been enrolled in the leadership development programme. We plan on creating a nursing leadership program of 40 hours, with theory and practice, formal actions, observational activities, leadership coaching, and virtual learning platform. This programme will be a part of the nursing development program of a 1052 bed-hospital with more than 800 nurses.

Update:

Hospital de Base, adhering to the International Nursing Now campaign, took on the challenge of qualifying the Nursing staff, empowering nurses in order to improve health within and outside the Institutional environment, through leadership training.

We selected fourty seven (14.5%) of the 323 nurses who are under the age of 35.

The Nightingale Challenge was launched in March 2020 with a 40-hour workload.

The objectives outlined for the leadership development program were:

  • To develop interpersonal efficiency;
  • To train team and career leadership;
  • To expand systemic critical thinking;
  • To train leadership within and outside of the institutional environment, aiming at improving regional health.

The methodology adopted was active education through:

  • Weekly meetings to discuss health leadership issues;
  • Lectures with expert leading professionals;
  • Presentation of successful cases and experiences;
  • Interaction through online platforms (Google Classroom and Zoom meetings);
  • Videos and debates;
  • Reading of articles and directed studies;
  • Participation in health event;
  • Leadership in practice (improving your performance through an individual development commitment).

To date, there have been 30 hours of planned training, scheduled to end in July 2020.

It has been a very rewarding experience, especially for the enthusiasm shown by the young nurses participating in the proposed activities.

 Attached are photos of our activities and of our young nurses who have accepted this worldwide challenge.
