We have partnered with two local nursing schools to promote leadership in home healthcare as a career. I will be speaking at Wesley College to two 4th year nursing students as part of their leadership program training. I will be promoting home health as a career and how leadership is different when you have a team of nurses off-site.
I will also be a preceptor for a nursing student from Delaware Technical College for her leadership class. She will be shadowing me for 40 hours and will be reporting back to her instructor on the different leadership styles and skills that are needed to manage a home health care agency.
Our goal with this out reach program is to change the perception of home care as a career and to promote a different pathway for nurses than working in a hospital setting. Most nursing programs encourage hospital nursing for their students. We hope to educate the educators as well to help them recommend home health as a career.
17 nurses and midwives have been enrolled on this leadership development programme.
