Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust

In January 2020 Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust enrolled 24 early-career registered nurses to undertake the Nursing Now Nightingale Challenge in celebration of the International Year of The Nurse. Despite the challenges of a pandemic in November 2020 the nurses joined together for a virtual graduation with the Trust’s Chief Nurse to share their journeys and celebrate their development and achievements. Staff presented improvement projects that impacted directly on patient experience and outcomes.

Comments from staff completing the challenge included:

“The Nightingale Challenge was a very supportive programme. It helped me become more confident in communicating with others.”

“It has helped my ward become more aware of nutrition and hydration and the importance of it.”

“I have developed by taking more of a lead on projects and making sure everyone’s opinion has been heard.”

“It was fantastic and well organised even when we were hit with the pandemic.”

Below is a selection of photos taken by one of the Florence Nightingale Fellows whose patient improvement project was to introduce a snack trolley ‘Shake and Cake Round’ for patients in Oncology whose relatives were not able to bring in snacks from home because of restricted visiting due to the COVID pandemic.

Please note all pictures were taken in accordance with the current infection control measures and social distancing at various points in the pandemic.
